Jazz Dance,
orignally gained its popularity in the early 1900s because of the ever-popular Jazz music. Jazz in the early years tied very closely to tap dancing, as tap dancing also uses jazz music. It however, evolved on broadway and musical theater into a new smooth, style taught today. And in the 80s, jazz dance was dance to mostly pop music and widely recognized as Modern Jazz.
Nowadays, you can see many dancers dances in MTVs and music videos to the Hip Hop and R & B music fusing jazz with other dance styles and culture in particular hip-hop /street, latin and reggae, but one can still recognizes the dancer moves with the jazz arms and body extensions, poises and many characters and moves orignated of the jazz dance.
Jazz dance emphasizes individual expression. Each teacher, dancer, and choreographer brings a unique style into the mix. The various styles of jazz dance have grown from the emphasis on individual style and improvization. Nowadays, you see this dance can be danced to any kind of music, jazz, blues, rap or rock. It has evolved to the dance that we know today - Street Jazz, New Jazz, Modern Jazz, Funk or Pop .
