 Introduction
Dancing is both the most artistic of social pastimes and the most social of artistic pastimes. in all societies, dancing forms an integral part of the lifestyle. Dancing is not only a reflection of life but is a basic human expression of life itself. While the initial motivation to dance is often a social one, once past the hurdle of actually learning to dance, many find in the music, the atmosphere and the dance, the opportunity to take on a new persona. in an instant, the dancer can be mentally and emotionally transported to almost any scenario of their choosing - a Texas Dance Ranch, an elegant Gala Ball in London's West End, a backstreet bar in Buenos Aires, a carnival in Copacabana, a bodega in old Havana, a bullfight in Valencia, a New York night spot or a Parisian cafe. the music and the venue create the atmosphere but it is the dancer who express their own individually through the language of the dance. In this unique, the most internationally popular dances are brought together in a practical and easily understandable way.

The Club Dance section deals with dances that are normally danced at special nightclub-style venues and where one dance or dance style predominates throughout the evening. These are Tango Argentino, Salsa (including Cumbia, Vallenato and Pachanga), Merengue, Lambada, Samba Reggae and American Line Dancing.

The international Latin-American Dance section covers the partner dances that originated in Latin Countries but whose style and technique were later internationally standardized. the international style and technique often differs from the original indigenous style but since it is the international style which is most widely danced and which is most durable, it is this style that is described here. these dances include Mambo, Rumba, Cha Cha Cha, Samba and Paso Doble. We have also included the Jive family if dances - Lindy Hop, Boogie Woogie and Rock 'n' Roll in this section because, in international competition, Jive is included in Latin dancing.

The International Standard Dance section introduces those dances formerly known as ballroom dances. the description used in this book represent a simplified version of the internationally standardized style and technique used throughout the world. these dances include the Social Foxtrot, Waltz, Quickstep, Slow Foxtrot and Modern Tango. There is no uniformly standardized technique for Viennese Waltz, so in this book it is presented as an easy style enjoyed by ordinary social dancers rather than the more demanding style danced in championships. With the International Standard and Latin-American dance competitions now part of the Olympic programme, these styles look set to reach and inspire as even wider audience and attain even greater popularity.

Whatever your musical taste or individual preferences, the huge variety of dances ensures that there is something to suit you. you do not need to be a good dancer to enjoy the dancing, the music, the mood, the atmosphere and of course, the social life. Dancing is accessible to everyone irrespective of age or ability.
